Fwd: A Farewell to Orkut

A Farewell to Orkut

After ten years of sparking conversations and forging connections, we have decided that it's time for us to start saying goodbye to Orkut. Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut's growth, we've decided to focus our energy and resources on making these other social platforms as amazing as possible for everyone who uses them.

We will shut down Orkut on 30 September 2014. Until then, there will be no impact on you, so you may have time to manage the transition. You can export your profile data, community posts and photos using Google Takeout (available until September 2016). We are preserving an archive of all public communities, which will be available online from 30 September 2014. If you don't want your posts or name to be included in the community archive, you can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account. Please visit our Help Centre for any further details.

It's been a great 10 years, and we apologise to those of you still actively using the service. We hope that you will find other online communities to spark more conversations and build even more connections for the next decade and beyond.

#AngelHackKL 2014 in 3 minutes!

02 July 2014

AngelHack KL 2014 thanks.

From the organizer Heislyc Loh...

Dear AngelHackers:
It has been 10 days since #AngelHackKL.
I cannot express my gratitude enough to our partners, judges, mentors, friends, my team and the AngelHackers.
If time could rewind, and AngelHack Kuala Lumpur 2014 goes without:
TM, our Official Telco Partner, we might have to tether and code under the hot sun and cold moon, but Life Made Easier with TM.
Huawei, our Technology Partner, we might overlook how we could enable any app into end-to-end Communications channel but Huawei Make It Possible.
AMD, our Inspiration Partner, there goes the sleepless nights of coding where AngelHackers are Enabling Today and Inspiring Tomorrow.
Microsoft, our Supporting Partner, we might still be sticking with our drawing boards and not able to Build this forward.
RadioShack, our DIY Partner, we still thought hardware hackathon is impossible, that it couldn't be One for All, All for Fun.
MaGIC, our Innovation Partner, we might still remain status quo about creating values and Building Great Entrepreneurs.
MDeC, our Ecosystem Partner, we might still be contented with local talents and forgot about Driving Transformation.
Uber, our Official Private Driver, AngelHackers will not Ride in style.
ZIO Creative, our Marketing Partner, you wouldn’t have seen the best of AngelHack KL.
And if it goes without Jam, Feng and Steason, my trusted and multi-talented teammates and the voluntary crew, none of this would happen.
We spent the past 5 months planning what we believe to be the “Hackathon of the Year” for the community.
I think we did it.
As we witnessed about 200 multi-skilled participants creating more than 50 high quality projects in just 24 hours and we’re expecting 10% continuity for next 6 months.
To me, hackathon is a sport.
It is a continuous exercise of creations and therefore nothings beats the satisfaction of building something great in 24 hours that wins judge’s heart, cheered by the crowd and crowning the champion.
Till date, I still believe we have created impacts no one could have imagine.
It is never only about commercially viable products; Throughout the journey, teams were formed, trust was established, relationship was built, lessons were learned, and these are experience that money can’t buy, and code can’t compile. It is the belief system and sportsmanship that counts.
I’m still not OK with the fact that #AHKL14 is over; In fact, it hasn’t.
Because every true entrepreneur will agree with me that,
everyday is a hackathon.

For your next big thing,
Brand Ambassador, AngelHack

Innocent sounding Taylor Swift. :)

I think you did a really insanely great swell concert!

Thanks once again to hitz.fm for taking the extra mile to bring a direct stage feed live on the radio! Her voice is so clear and melodious.

11 June 2014

I know #taylorswift is on tonight. But help a friend get her iPad back!

A friend was at the McDonald's restaurant in Section 14, PJ, Malaysia. She inadvertently left her iPad on the counter and it was gone the next moment she looked for it.
Thankfully she managed to get the eatery to hand her the CCTV snapshots.
If any of you can ID the lady in brown who is seen calmly taking the iPad, do let me know in the comments or tweet or PM or email.

Many many thanks!

(If you are a witness or bystander in any of the pictures and would like your face to be blurred, kindly private message me. Thanks. I value all privacy.)

Important Notice to Our Users

We've become aware of some unauthorized access to our systems and internal company data and we wanted to let you know the steps we're taking in response. As soon as we were aware of this issue we immediately launched an investigation. Information security and data protection are of great importance to us at Spotify which is why we're contacting you today.

Our evidence shows that only one Spotify user's data has been accessed and this did not include any password, financial or payment information. We have contacted this one individual. Based on our findings, we are not aware of any increased risk to users as a result of this incident.

We take these matters very seriously and as a general precaution will be asking certain Spotify users to re-enter their username and password to log in over the coming days.

As an extra safety step, we are asking all Android users to upgrade their app using the following instructions:

Google Play (most Android users):
Most users will automatically receive a message within the Spotify application asking them to download and install a new version of Spotify that looks like this:

If you don't see this message within your Spotify application in the next few days, please use this link to go straight to Google Play to install the latest update, which will guide you on how to install the new version of Spotify.

Amazon AppStore for Android (e.g. Kindle Fire):
We will update your application over the coming days. If Spotify prompts you for an upgrade, please follow the instructions.

As always, Spotify does not recommend installing Android applications from anywhere other than Google Play or Amazon Appstore. At this time there is no action recommended for iOS and Windows Phone users.

Please note that offline playlists will have to be re-downloaded in the new version. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes, but hope you understand that this is a necessary precaution to safeguard the quality of our service and protect our users.

We have taken steps to strengthen our security systems in general and help protect you and your data – and we will continue to do so. We will be taking further actions in the coming days to increase security for our users.

A great piece of the Sunday sermon last week!

During the sermon last Sunday at church, There was a guest speaker.

Could not quite recall his name, from India but based for a while in the USA. He was real good.
He started off by saying the following, striking chords in me, which I paraphrased from memory...
To the young people, don't go around chasing for your future partner. Don't do the numbers and go to those gatherings with lots of people just to look for one. God has allocated one just right for you! All you got to do is wait and pray. Wait and pray to God.
I never dated anyone. I just waited in prayer. Until I started my job at an association (?). There was a lady who specialised in live broadcasting. I never knew I would marry her one day.
God told me one day to talk to her. I got tongue tied. She sort of ignored. But time grew on and on. God kept telling me to talk to her. Finally I mustered the courage to talk to her. Then God told me to ask her to talk to God.
Next days and some days following that. Each day I asked her "Did God talk to you?" to which she said "no". Then I said what God told me to say: "We should get married. I prayed to God." She was taken aback. I told her to confirm with God. I did ask her for a tea at one point.
Some days later she came excitedly and said "Yes God DID talk to me and YES I will marry you!". So here we are 23 years later still very happily married with some children.
So I tell you young people, just wait and pray. I was already 30 at that time the moment we agreed to be married. No dating, no running around. DON'T BE DESPERATE. It will only harm you.
